Grocery Shopping Horror

Oh boy...I spent a little over 2 hours on a grocery trip that didn't even buy us a week's worth of food. I never realized how much dairy and/or food containing any form of milk products my kids eat. No wonder we don't have picky eaters; we only ever buy the foods my kids eat...dairy and gluten. I think I'm in trouble.

I just need to at least get past breakfast meals. The only foods my kids ever eat for breakfast is cereal and milk or waffles....all of which contain milk (products).

I have a feeling this is going to be a long week....this better be worth it!

  1. ah, so been there!! We went with rice milk by Rice Dream - in cereal it's hard to tell the difference between that and skim milk. Drinking it, however is a different story. We used to buy vanilla flavored for drinking and regular for cereal.
I found a company called "Cherrybrook Kitchen" - they make pancake/waffle mixes that are GFCF, and cake mixes too. In many cases, you have to go organic.
Rice Chex is GFCF for cereals if that helps...

  2. also, do you have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's near you? At our local Whole Foods, I called the office and asked to set up a time for someone to walk me around the store and show me where are the GFCF stuff was, and they gladly did it. They have a lot of stuff marked, but it's still hard to navigate and it takes forever. They should help you (helps their business too!)
    Good luck!

  4. try coconut ice cream. They carry it at Whole Food and Kroger. Very tasty, much better than the soy/rice ice creams. Also, it does get better. Oh, we also use Earth Balance for a butter substitute, and it works pretty well.

  6. We found this out the hard way when my son was diagnosed with milk and egg allergies at 13 months old. I echo the suggestion for Whole Foods- they really were our lifesavers! (He's no longer allergic, but is flatly refusing to drink regular milk...sigh...)
